First Workplace Solutions’ principal is Mary Crean. Mary was called to the Bar at Grays Inn, London, in 1996 after completing an LLB in Liverpool in 1995 and Bar professional examinations at the Council of Legal Education London in 1996.
Mary enjoyed a thriving Family and Criminal Law practice as a Barrister (both defence and prosecution) in Liverpool, England, until 2009, when she emigrated to Australia.
Mary completed a Postgraduate Law Diploma at The University of Queensland in 2010 and was admitted to the role of Legal Practitioner (Queensland) in September 2010.
Mary has been a specialist Workplace Investigator for over a decade and has conducted complex and large-scale workplace investigations for government bodies, educational institutions, and ASX-listed companies across numerous industries, including health, education, mining, media, professional and financial services, not-for-profit organisations, and small businesses.
Mary has travelled all over Australia to undertake ‘in-person’ interviews; however, during the pandemic lockdowns, the majority of interviews were managed remotely by Microsoft Teams. This has proved to be an effective medium for conducting interviews and is routinely used post-pandemic. The merits of face-to-face interviews versus video conferencing should be considered at the time of instruction.
Mary has a reputation for taking a robust approach to examining evidence while dealing with participants with respect, impartiality, and sensitivity. Her success in managing some highly sensitive and factually complicated investigations over the last ten years demonstrates the highest standard of professionalism. Since 2012, she has exclusively devoted her career to providing solutions to Australian workplaces in the investigation sphere. Her experience as a court advocate has provided a solid basis for her work as an investigator and HR professional.
Mary is a dedicated HR practitioner who routinely provides HR services to franchises and small businesses regarding the day-to-day issues faced by employers who require direct, no-nonsense, and procedurally sound advice to manage staff and ensure employer compliance with the relevant industrial awards.
Mary ensures that investigations, cultural reviews, and mediations are conducted in a manner that respects the rights of all parties involved. Managing these processes in a timely manner reflects her understanding of the importance of swift resolution while maintaining integrity and transparency. This approach fosters trust in the outcomes of these procedures and contributes to a positive organisational culture where conflicts are addressed effectively and fairly.
Mary is based in Brisbane, dedicating her career to providing workplace solutions and HR services across Australia.
